Do you know Punjab Artisanal Clusters???? National Handloom Clusters witness boom
The
handloom sector has registered more than 10 percent growth this year.
Ministry of Textiles believes it as an export-oriented segment and has
therefore allocated Rs. 241 Crore for it in the budget 2006-2007. Infrastructure upgradation of Haryana Clusters
Exports
from Haryana show over 35% growth as per latest data. The performance is
better than national figures; the exports of which increased by 24% last
year. To further accelerate development, a project under Textile
Centres Infrastructure Development Scheme (TCIDS) of the Centre shall be
set up in Panipat. Training of 90 SHGs by CII for mainstreaming
CII-Southern
Region (CII-SR) will `mentor' self-help groups in various parts of the
State and link them to corporates in an effort to bring corporate closer
to grass roots-level initiatives and improve their social responsibility
record. Trainings will be given to 500 SHGs in areas such as forming
marketing links, choosing/production/packaging of products. Out of
these, ninety will be specifically mentored and linked to corporates to

According to a State Level Skill Mapping Study conducted by the
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Tamil Nadu, additional
educational infrastructure capable of training 80,000 students a year
have to be built in Tamil Nadu with Public Private Partnership over the
next 10 years to cater to the growing manufacturing and service sector

national team is to be formed to deal with violations of IPR in
Indonesia. The President signed a decree allowing for the creation of a
team of experts to formulate a national policy on the issue, decide on
steps needed to settle problems related to IP rights and educate people.

States and Japan pledged cooperation to protect and enforce intellectual
property rights, infringements of which cost U.S. companies hundreds of
billions of dollars a year. Infringements on IPR cost American
businesses about $250 billion a year and the result is the loss of
hundreds of thousands of jobs in the United States. $10mn for ICT development in SME's
Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) approved a US$10mn grant to support
ICT program for e-business and SME development in Latin America. The
program, ICT4BUS-II consists of individual pilot projects executed by
selected institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean with an
objective of improving the competitiveness of SMEs in the region by
expanding their access to innovative ICT solutions and services. Development of 10 key clusters in Jordan Vision 2020

organize the Global SME’s 2006, an exhibition on the latest information
communication technology (ICT) for local small and medium entrepreneurs
from Aug 24 to 26. The exhibition will include seminars, workshops,
e-Enabling clinics, business matching sessions and business networking
cocktails as well as a leadership forum. Registrations and participation
are free to all SME’s.
GFIP
2006 is to take place in Singapore from Aug 21-22 and cover IP rights --
copyright, trademark and patents, as well as enforcement, strategic and
business issues. Event to be hosted by the IP Academy shall feature more
than 30 speakers from diverse markets segments and different
disciplines. UNIDO training course on SME cluster and network development UNIDO in co-operation with the International training center of ILO is organizing a training course on cluster and network development in Turin, Italy. The course is from 24th April to 5th May. The two week course shall comprise of case studies, best practices action recommendations and visits to exemplary clusters. enterprises in the EU. These enterprises are the backbone of the
European economy and provide around 65 million jobs. By using ICT and
particularly e-business, SME’s are able to tap greater opportunities to
develop, buy and sell over the Internet, reduce their costs and boost
productivity. The e-Europe 2002 Action Plan provided the basis for
targeted barrier of distance, allowing SME’s to trade worldwide from a
single website. Do you know Punjab Artisanal Clusters???? The progressive state of Punjab consists of over 19.7 million small and medium enterprises, about 653 large enterprises. It is committed to creating a climate conducive to investment and has been proactive in attracting investment from the private sector, particularly in areas like textiles, agro-processing and biotechnology.
The above diagram shows the Sectoral distribution of Artisanal clusters in Punjab The handicrafts of Punjab are divided into two types: ones produced in the rural areas and the royal crafts that flourished in the urban centers. The former include cotton textiles, basketry, embroidery etc. while the latter are tile and woodwork skills, ivory, silver and gold work, naqqashi and architectural crafts. Textile Clusters comprise 64% of the total artisanal clusters in the state. Since earliest times the weavers in the state have produced colorful fabrics of silk and cotton. The state is known for Phulkaris and embroidery stitches. Punjab is at present the second largest producer of cotton and blended yarn, third largest producer of mill made fabric. Further it has a competitive strength in textiles, woolens and auto parts due to presence of industry clusters. Amritsar being one of the oldest centers of carpet weaving. Hand knotted carpets of fine quality are being made in the state since the Mughal period. Needlework of Punjab is unique. Baghs, Phulkaris, handkerchiefs, and scarf’s are intricately designed in rich traditional patterns and motifs. The state currently exports textiles, woolen and cotton, hosiery and ready-made garments to USSR, Norway, UK, USA and West Asia. Woodwork Clusters comprise of 17% of the total Artisanal clusters in Punjab. In fine arts, the local traditions of Punjab were greatly influenced by the works of Central Asian and Persian artists of the early Mughal period. The woodwork has always been traditionally renowned consisting of artistic beds and skillfully made backrests, low seats called Peeras. Furniture designed consists of boxes, toys and decorative pieces made out of lacquer finish to woodcrafts, in adorning it with engraving wood. It is mainly in Batala, Amritsar and Hoshiarpur that woodcarving is being practiced. Accessory clusters comprise of 10% of the total artisanal clusters in the state. Horn and Bone Clusters encompass 7% of the total artisanal clusters in the state. The main items made consist of ivory, mirror stands, table lamps, cabinets, boxes, etc. Leather Clusters embrace 2% of the total artisanal clusters in the state.
