SMEs hopeful of quick reforms from UPA govt

Small- and medium-enterprises (SME) and the textile sector have been reeling under the impact of a tough global economy. But these enterprises are hopeful of quick reforms to facilitate a turnaround. With a stable government in place and the exclusion of the Left from the scheme of things, small- and medium-enterprises, or SMEs, are hopeful that the government will take steps to further stimulate demand and create an SME exchange for companies between Rs 5 and Rs 50 crore. Sage India launches payroll software for SMEs

Software solutions provider Sage India today announced the launch of its payroll software designed for small and medium businesses to help companies with their salary-related operations. The Payroll software, 'Sage Pocket' comes in two versions - professional and premium - along with online modules available as add-ons, Sage said in a statement. The Sage Pocket Professional solution is configurable and allows the user to set statutory regulations, calculate income tax, track reimbursements and generate pay slips. Slovenia Shines for Indian SMEs

Slovenia is one of the most prosperous countries in Central Europe. Subsequent to its affiliation with the European Union in 2004, the country has moved towards privatisation. The Slovenian government has also undertaken a number of structural reforms to boost the economy and generate employment opportunities. Revised IIP likely to be more robust

The 2.3% decline in India's industrial production in March 2009 - most dismal performance in about 14 years - was only to be expected after the merchandise exports contracted by a third during the month. Much of this contraction was led by the decline in manufacturing output, which fell 3.3% in March, from a year ago. Karnataka State's FY '09 exports might shrink 25%

The economic slowdown has taken its toll on the export performance of Karnataka for the year 2008-09. The state's export earnings are estimated to be lower by around 25 per cent for the year ended March 2009 compared to Rs 1,32,700 crore achieved in the previous fiscal. For the nine month period ended December 2009, exports from the state were estimated at Rs 70,000 crore and for the full year, the initial predictions are that the state may have lost around Rs 10,000 crore export earnings, according to D Muralidhar, president, Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI). Tamil Nadu Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani Drugs Manufacturers Association (TASUDMA) has demanded the Commissionarate of Indian System of Medicine in Tamil Nadu to launch a Drug Information Centre (DIC) for ISM in the state. In the communication to the Commissioner, the Association has highlighted the need and scope for such an information centre. If it is sanctioned, it will be the first DIC for ISM in the country. The Kochi-based Coconut Development Board has formulated a project for the rejuvenation or replacement of old, disease-affected coconut palms. Barclays Bank of Kenya Limited (Barclays Kenya) has launched a new product for its customers. Computermaker IBM recently unveiled its newest server offerings for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Makati City.
